For our 2019 Exhibition our Guest artist is Sculpturist Ben Foster from Kaikoura.
Right: Ben Foster pictured with the Gold Deer, Kaikoura Seaward Mountains (2018)
"Ben's works are a culmination of the natural and the manmade - a careful
balance of form and motion.”
New Zealand-based sculptor Ben Foster draws upon the physical landscape
of home with his static, stylised figurative works mirroring the dramatic forms
of the mountains which are his backdrop. His artistic practice serves as a
vehicle through which he explores human interaction with the land and the
animals with which we share our lives and spaces.
The stark geometry of Foster’s sculptural practice reveals the artist’s ongoing
quest for achieving perfection. Shaping familiar objects into smooth, generic
beings, Foster’s figures resist any psychological insight.
Today, the Exhibition is a ‘must see’ event on the provinces’ Arts calendar, annually showcasing more than 500 artworks from over 80 artists, in a wide variety of mediums. The Exhibition is for invited artists from throughout New Zealand along with our own local artists also able to exhibit. One of the many drawcards for artists is such a varied high standard of artwork viewed by a large audience from Otago and Southland and also our policy of paying for return freight on unsold exhibits. For such a small town (approx. 400) our exhibition in our large community centre is quite unique. Many of our artists travel to attend Opening Night.
Emerging Artist Award: $1000 prize awarded on opening night from a limited selection of works displayed for the duration of the exhibition. Selected artists receive a complimentary ticket to Opening Night. Entry is by digital image due 1st June 2019. Entry form available here.
